The Sacroiliac (SI) Joint is positioned in the lower part of the body between the Sacrum, (the big, triangle-shaped bone at the base of your spine,) and the ilium, (the large broad bone forming the upper part of each half of the pelvis.)
This low-motion joint connects the hip bones to each side of the sacrum where the base of the spine meets the pelvis, and acts as a shock absorber between the lower body and torso.
As with any other joint in the body, the SI Joint may become injured or degenerated over time, leading to symptoms of SI Joint dysfunction, inflammation and pain such as:
- One-sided low back pain
- Pain when standing, walking, sitting down or standing back up
- Increased pain when walking up an incline or stairs
- Pain radiating into the buttocks, lower back & groin
- Referred pain into the lower limbs
- Stiffness in the lower back, hips, legs or groin
- Pain after sitting, standing or lying in certain positions for long periods of time
What causes SI Joint Pain?
Potential reasons for SI Joint pain are varied, but here are just a few of the more common causes:
- Degenerative sacroiliitis
- Tumor
- Infection
- Inflammation
- Degenerative osteoarthritis
- Trauma
When SI Joint pain symptoms persist for weeks or months and do not respond to non-surgical treatment methods, sacroiliac joint fusion may be indicated.
SI Joint Fusion is an innovative new treatment for reducing or eliminating chronic SI joint pain via use of a bone graft and/or instruments employed for stimulation of bone growth over the sacroiliac joint to create a single, immobile unit. This minimally invasive pain relief solution has produced powerful results using a short procedure that involves no metal implants. Patients who undergo this procedure experience a fast recovery time.
