Is Pain Medicine Necessary?

Many people are reluctant to take pain medications to relieve their suffering, and with good reason. The potential side effects alone may be cause for hesitation, and if that’s not enough, the risk of addiction is a very real concern for those who simply want to be free of their pain.

When pain cannot be controlled through methods other than over-the-counter or prescription drugs, it might be well worth any risks or side effects of taking pain medicine; but let’s consider some alternative treatment methods that may bring relief from pain without need for medications.

  1. Lifestyle changes

When chronic pain impacts your ability to keep up with day-to-day activities, the cause may be as simple as making changes in the way you eat, sleep, or move about through the day. Tension and stress alone can bring about painful symptoms; combine this with poor sleeping habits, insufficient nutrition or lack of physical activity throughout the day, and the potential for pain is significantly increased.

If you find yourself limited by chronic pain, with no obvious reason for your symptoms, (such as a traumatic injury or debilitating disease,) talk with your physician to determine whether simple changes in lifestyle can reduce or eliminate your pain without need for medications.

  2. Physical therapy

When lifestyle changes alone aren’t enough to reduce your chronic pain or painful symptoms resulting from an injury, your physician may recommend physical therapy to relieve your suffering.

Physical therapy addresses the source of your pain by targeting areas of weakness, stiffness or inflammation that exacerbate painful conditions. This may be accomplished through a combination of stretching, exercise, massage, heat/ice packs, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), or other methods indicated by your physical therapist. By increasing strength, flexibility and range of movement, pain and inflammation may be decreased, and daily activities accomplished with greater ease.

  3. Alternative treatment methods

Thanks to the latest in state-of-the-art technologies, there are now many alternative treatment options available to relieve suffering without need for pain medications, or debilitating surgeries. New and innovative technologies in interventional pain medicine now afford patients a variety of minimally invasive solutions for treating chronic pain conditions, many of which provide permanent relief.

When lifestyle changes or physical therapy cannot provide relief from your chronic pain, and you don’t want to reply on pain medications to eliminate your suffering, consider powerful new treatment protocols such as joint injections, spinal cord stimulation, radiofrequency treatments, or DRG therapy, among others. These life-changing procedures may provide the answer to finding pain relief once and for all, without need for risky or addictive pain medications.
